Abstract

Postpartum blues is a mild affective disorder that commonly occurs during the first week after childbirth and may affect maternal well-being. Maternal knowledge regarding physical and psychological changes during the postpartum period is considered an important factor in preventing this condition. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between knowledge level and the incidence of postpartum blues among postpartum mothers in Jayapura City. A quantitative analytic study with a cross-sectional design was conducted involving 121 postpartum mothers who met the study criteria. Data were analyzed using Spearman’s rho test. The results showed that normal postpartum blues was more commonly found among mothers with good knowledge, while the incidence of postpartum blues was higher among mothers with lower levels of knowledge. Statistical analysis revealed a significant relationship between maternal knowledge and the incidence of postpartum blues (p = 0.022; r = 0.208). These findings indicate that inadequate maternal knowledge is associated with an increased risk of experiencing postpartum blues. Therefore, strengthening health education during pregnancy, promoting regular antenatal care visits, and enhancing family support are important strategies to prevent postpartum blues among postpartum mothers.
