Abstract

Living with an ostomy often leads to significant changes in lifestyle and daily habits. Patients frequently experience physical and psychological challenges that may negatively affect their quality of life. Self-efficacy is an important factor that can help ostomy patients cope with these challenges and improve their ability to perform self-care. This study aimed to examine the role of self-efficacy in the care of patients with an ostomy. A literature review was conducted through a systematic search of articles published between 2016 and 2025 using Google Scholar. Studies were selected based on the PICO framework, consisting of Population (ostomy patients), Intervention (self-efficacy), and Outcome (effectiveness of ostomy care). Boolean operators (AND/OR) were used to combine the search keywords. Articles were screened according to predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The review identified four full-text articles that met the eligibility criteria. All included studies reported positive effects of self-efficacy on ostomy care. Higher levels of self-efficacy were associated with better self-care management, increased confidence in stoma care, improved adaptation to life with an ostomy, and enhanced quality of life. In conclusion, self-efficacy plays a crucial role in supporting effective ostomy care. Knowledge, cognitive abilities, and experiences gained following stoma surgery can positively influence patients’ perceptions of their new life circumstances, enabling them to focus on adaptation and well-being rather than the limitations imposed by the stoma.
