Abstract

Bark contains many secondary metabolites which are responsible for many biological activities. Based on previous study, lactons in the bark of massoy can produce some biological activities such as anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, allelopathic, and anti-tumourgenic. The aim of this research were to screen the phytochemical content of the bark extracts of massoy and examined its antibacterial activities. Massoy barks were extracted using ethanol, then partitioned with ethyl acetate and n-hexane. Extracts tested for antibacterial activities against E. coli and S. aureus using dish diffusion assay. Result showed that ethyl acetate and n-hexane fractions had strong activities with clear diameter zone of 16.26 mm from ethyl acetate fraction against E. coli and 16.24 mm from n-hexane fraction against S. aureus. Alkaloid was the main phytochemical content of the total extracts.
