JURNAL BIOLOGI PAPUA

p-ISSN: 2086-3314 | e-ISSN: 2503-0450

1. General Information

Jurnal Biologi Papua is a peer-reviewed scholarly journal published by the Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Cenderawasih, in collaboration with the Indonesian Biology Association (Perhimpunan Biologi Indonesia, PBI), Papua Chapter.

The journal publishes original research articles, review articles, and short communications in biology and related disciplines.

Jurnal Biologi Papua is published twice a year, in April and October.

All manuscripts must demonstrate scientific originality, methodological rigor, relevance to the journal's focus and scope, and compliance with the journal's publication ethics.

2. Manuscript Submission

All manuscripts must be submitted electronically through the journal's Online Journal System (OJS).

Authors are required to register or log in to the journal's website and follow the online submission procedure.

The corresponding author is responsible for ensuring that all required manuscript files, metadata, declarations, and supporting documents are submitted correctly.

Each submission must include:

  1. A manuscript prepared according to these Author Guidelines.

  2. Complete information about all authors and their institutional affiliations.

  3. A cover letter explaining the manuscript's scientific contribution, originality, and relevance to the journal.

  4. An anonymized manuscript file for double-anonymous peer review.

  5. A separate title page containing author names, affiliations, and corresponding author information.

  6. Relevant ethics approval information, research permits, and other supporting documents, when applicable.

The cover letter must confirm that the manuscript has not been published previously and is not under consideration by another journal.

Authors may suggest qualified independent reviewers. However, the editorial team retains full authority over reviewer selection.

3. Types of Manuscripts

3.1 Original Research Articles

Original Research Articles present original scientific findings supported by appropriate research methodologies, reliable data, and rigorous analysis.

Manuscripts should generally not exceed 8,000 words, including the main text, tables, and figure captions, unless otherwise approved by the editor.

The recommended structure is:

  • Title

  • Abstract

  • Keywords

  • Introduction

  • Materials and Methods

  • Results and Discussion

  • Conclusion

  • Acknowledgments (if applicable)

  • Funding Statement

  • Conflict of Interest Statement

  • References

3.2 Review Articles

Review Articles provide comprehensive, critical, and up-to-date evaluations of important scientific developments within the journal's scope.

A review article should critically examine existing evidence, identify knowledge gaps, evaluate methodological limitations, and propose directions for future research.

Review Articles should provide sufficient depth and coverage of relevant literature, ordinarily approaching 8,000 words or more when justified by the subject. Shorter reviews may be considered when their scope and scientific contribution warrant publication.

The selection of references must be guided by relevance, scientific quality, and appropriate coverage of the field rather than mandatory citation quotas.

The structure may include:

  • Title

  • Abstract

  • Keywords

  • Introduction

  • Thematic Review Sections

  • Critical Discussion

  • Research Gaps and Future Directions

  • Conclusion

  • Acknowledgments (if applicable)

  • References

3.3 Short Communications

Short Communications present concise reports of original findings that are scientifically significant and suitable for rapid communication.

These manuscripts should ordinarily contain approximately 2,500 words and provide sufficient methodological information and supporting evidence.

The manuscript structure may be adjusted according to the nature of the research.

4. Language Requirements

Manuscripts must be written in clear, grammatically correct, publication-quality English.

Authors are responsible for ensuring the clarity, accuracy, and scientific meaning of their manuscripts.

The editorial team may request language revision when the quality of English is insufficient for scientific evaluation or publication.

Language editing does not guarantee acceptance of a manuscript.

Authors must accurately report relevant approvals and must not claim ethical clearance that was not obtained.

15. Plagiarism and Similarity Screening

Jurnal Biologi Papua applies a maximum manuscript similarity index of 20%.

Submitted manuscripts are subject to similarity screening during the editorial process.

Manuscripts exceeding the threshold may be returned for revision or rejected following editorial assessment.

A similarity score of 20% or lower does not automatically establish originality or guarantee acceptance.

Evidence of plagiarism, inappropriate copying, duplicate publication, or substantial unattributed overlap may result in rejection regardless of the similarity score.

Authors must comply with the journal's Plagiarism Policy.

16. Peer Review Process

Manuscripts that pass the initial editorial screening undergo double-anonymous peer review.

At least two independent reviewers with relevant scientific expertise evaluate manuscripts that proceed to external review.

Reviewers assess originality, scientific contribution, methodology, data quality, interpretation, presentation, and adherence to publication ethics.

Authors must respond appropriately to reviewer comments and provide revised manuscripts when requested.

The final publication decision is made by the authorized editor based on scientific quality, reviewer recommendations, and the journal's editorial policies.

17. Authorship and Contributions

All listed authors must have made substantial scholarly contributions to the research and manuscript preparation.

Authors must approve the submitted manuscript and agree to take responsibility for their contributions.

Individuals who do not qualify for authorship should be acknowledged appropriately.

Changes to authorship after submission require a justified request and agreement from the affected authors, subject to editorial approval.

18. Funding and Conflicts of Interest

Authors must disclose all relevant funding sources, grants, institutional support, and sponsorships.

Any financial, professional, personal, or institutional relationships that could influence the interpretation of the research must be disclosed.

If no relevant conflicts of interest exist, authors should include an appropriate declaration.

19. Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools

Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, integrity, and ethical compliance of their manuscripts.

Generative artificial intelligence tools must not be listed as authors.

Substantive use of AI-assisted tools in manuscript preparation, data processing, analysis, or content generation must be transparently disclosed, including the tool used and the nature of its contribution, where applicable.

Authors must verify AI-assisted content and ensure that references, data, and interpretations are accurate.

AI tools must not be used to fabricate research findings, generate misleading evidence, or misrepresent scientific contributions.

20. Copyright and Publication Licensing

Authors must comply with the journal's current Copyright and Licensing Policy.

Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce third-party materials when required.

Copyright ownership, licensing conditions, and permitted reuse of published articles are governed by the journal's formally adopted policies.

When revision is requested, authors must submit:

  1. A revised manuscript.

  2. A point-by-point response to reviewer comments.

  3. Additional supporting information when requested.

All substantial changes should be clearly identified.

Revised manuscripts may undergo further editorial assessment or additional peer review.

The editorial team reserves the right to reject manuscripts that do not meet the journal's scientific, ethical, or editorial requirements.

22. Final Publication Requirements

Before publication, accepted manuscripts undergo editorial preparation, copyediting, layout, and proofreading.

The corresponding author may be asked to verify the final proof.

Authors must carefully check the accuracy of scientific names, data, figures, references, and author information.
